By Momof2Boyz — Funding everyone else’s cravings since forever
There is a universal parenting truth that nobody warns you about:
Once you become a parent…
None of your snacks are actually yours anymore.
Doesn’t matter if:
you bought them
you hid them
you specifically said they were yours
you waited all day to eat them
The second your child sees you with a snack, they suddenly act like they have been starving for three to five business days.
And now?
Now you owe the Parent Snack Tax.
What Is the Parent Snack Tax?
The Parent Snack Tax is the completely unfair but apparently mandatory parenting law that says:
If a parent has a snack, a child must immediately request part of it.
Not their own snack.
Not the exact same snack you literally offered them five minutes earlier.
Your snack.
The one they did not want until they saw you enjoying it.
That one.
The Snack Was Safe… Until They Heard the Wrapper
And honestly, half the problem is the wrapper.
Because kids can hear a snack wrapper from three rooms away.
You can be:
hiding in the pantry
sitting in your car
eating in total silence
opening it as gently as humanly possible
And somehow, they still appear like tiny snack detectives.
You hear:
“What are you eating?”
Immediately followed by:
“Can I have some?”
No.
No, you may not.
This is my emotional support snack.
And Suddenly They Want What They “Didn’t Like”
This is the part that makes it personal.
Because if you had offered them that exact same snack earlier, they would have said:
“Ew.”
“I don’t like that.”
“I wanted something else.”
“No thanks.”
But now that you are eating it?
Now it’s apparently the most delicious thing they’ve ever seen in their life.
Now they need it.
Now they love it.
Now they have to taste it “just to see.”
Absolutely not.
The Worst Part? They Never Want a Small Bite
It’s never:
“Can I have one?”
No.
It’s always:
a giant handful
half your bag
the biggest bite possible
or somehow the exact piece you were saving for last
And if you say no?
Suddenly you’re selfish.
Like wow.
I bought the groceries, packed the lunches, made the meals, and somehow I’m the villain because I wanted six uninterrupted chips.
Incredible.
And Don’t Even Try to Eat in Secret
Because if you’re a parent, you’ve probably done this at least once:
eaten snacks in the pantry
hidden candy in a cabinet
opened chips in complete darkness
chewed as quietly as possible
pretended you weren’t eating anything at all
And honestly?
That’s not sneaky.
That’s survival.
Because sometimes all you want is one little treat that doesn’t require:
sharing
negotiating
cutting it in half
or hearing “that’s not fair” from across the room
Is that too much to ask?
Apparently yes.
The Mom Bite Is Never Just One Bite
And let’s talk about the biggest lie in parenting:
“Can I just have one bite?”
Because we all know “one bite” is never one bite.
One bite is:
40% of your cookie
half your sandwich
three fries and a chicken nugget
somehow your entire drink
And if they’re younger?
They don’t even take neat bites.
They take the kind of bite that ruins the whole thing.
Now I don’t even want it anymore.
Congratulations.
And Somehow Their Food Is Never Good Enough
This is what really gets me.
Because your child could have:
their own plate
their own snack
their own drink
the exact same thing you’re eating
And somehow?
Yours still looks better.
Mine is:
colder
crunchier
fresher
more interesting
or just more valuable because it belongs to me
And I would really love to understand the science behind that.
Because it feels targeted.
At This Point, I Just Assume I’m Buying Snacks for the Whole House
I no longer buy snacks thinking:
“This is for me.”
I buy snacks thinking:
“This is for me… and the tiny freeloaders who will absolutely end up eating half of it.”
That’s just where we are now.
There is no personal food.
There is only:
shared food
hidden food
and food you have to eat in your car before walking into the house
And honestly, sometimes the car snack is the only safe snack.
Final Thoughts From a Snack-Deprived Parent
If you have ever:
hidden snacks from your kids
eaten in silence like a criminal
lost your favorite treat to a “just one bite” request
or bought yourself something special only to never actually enjoy it
Please know…
You are not alone.
The Parent Snack Tax is real.
And frankly?
It’s aggressive.
Momof2Boyz Reminder 💙
If you bought the snack, opened the snack, and sat down for two peaceful seconds with the snack…
You deserved to eat the whole snack.
No sharing required.
