Why is it that no matter how many cups we already own, we somehow always end up bringing home more?
At first, it starts innocently enough. You buy a normal set of cups for the house. Maybe a few matching glasses if you're feeling fancy. A couple wine glasses tucked in the back for the rare moment of peace and quiet after the kids go to bed.
Then life happens.
You order a snow cone and suddenly the kids need the color-changing cup because “Mom! Look! It turns blue!” So naturally, it comes home with you.
You go to a sporting event and the souvenir soda cup is “collectible.” Into the cabinet it goes.
You take a cruise, buy the unlimited soda package, and now you own four giant cruise cups that are apparently too sentimental to throw away.
Theme parks? Refillable cups.
Festivals? Special edition cups.
School events? Promotional cups.
Random fairs? Cups with logos you'll forget about in three weeks.
Everywhere we go, someone has figured out that if they put a lid and straw on a plastic cup, we suddenly feel emotionally attached to it.
And honestly? I get it.
Those cups become tiny little memories. That Disney cup reminds you of the trip where everyone actually got along for an entire afternoon. The baseball stadium cup reminds you of the game where your kid caught a foul ball. The cruise cup reminds you of unlimited mocktails and not cooking dinner for a week.
The problem is… the cups multiply.
One day you open the cabinet and it practically attacks you. Cups tumble out like you’re starring in a low-budget home organization show. You realize you have somehow collected enough plastic tumblers to hydrate an entire youth soccer league.
At this point, something has to give.
This is usually when the cups begin their second life cycle in my house.
Some become crafting cups filled with paint water, markers, beads, or random LEGO pieces.
Some get donated because surely someone else can use the twenty-seven identical stadium cups we somehow accumulated.
Others finally make their way into the recycling bin after years of loyal service holding watered-down juice boxes and melted ice.
Yet somehow… the cabinet never gets emptier.
Because next weekend we’ll go somewhere fun, see another “limited edition refillable cup,” and think:
“Well… this one is cute.”
And the cycle begins again.
So tell me honestly…
What do you do with the millions of cups we collect?
