If you walk into my house on any given weekend, you aren’t going to find anyone reading quietly in a corner or casually scrolling their phone. Nope. You are going to walk straight into a digital battleground. The couch is maxed out, the headsets are on, and every single person in the room—including me—is locked in.
In our house, we don't have a "spectator section." We are a 100% gamer household.
But even in a house where everyone plays, I’ve noticed that the gaming world is still split right down the middle into two very distinct types of people: Those who love the grind, and those who play just for the vibe.
Watching my boys tackle a game versus how I approach it has made me realize that even though we're all holding controllers, we are playing entirely different games. And honestly? Both styles come with some pretty awesome perks.
Here is how both types of gamers win in our house.
Type 1: The Hardcore Grinders (The Boys)
These are the players who don't just play a game; they try to conquer it. This is firmly where my boys live. They want the highest rank, the rarest skins, and the ultimate bragging rights.
Elite Problem-Solving: Watching them handle complex strategies under pressure is wild. They aren't just pressing buttons; they are calculating risks, managing resources, and thinking ten steps ahead. It’s basically a high-speed workout for their brains.
Insane Perseverance: If they lose a match or fail a level, they don't quit. They analyze what went wrong, adapt, and try again. That kind of "never give up" attitude is a pretty amazing life skill disguised as screen time.
The Ultimate Teamwork: When they are playing together, they have to communicate like a well-oiled machine. They are learning to handle loss as a team and celebrate each other's wins, which is huge for a household full of boys.
Type 2: The Casual Cozy Gamers (Mom)
Then there’s my style. I love to play, but I’m not trying to sweat through a competitive bracket after a long day of running a business and keeping the house alive. I’m here for the escape, the fun, and the aesthetic.
Guilt-Free Stress Relief: While the boys are getting their adrenaline pumping, my gaming time is a total mental reset. It’s my version of diving into a good book—an immersive escape where I can completely unplug from reality.
The Power of Aesthetic & Creation: I’m the type of gamer who loves a good storyline, a beautifully designed world, or a game where I can build and organize things. It satisfies that creative itch without any of the real-world mess.
Zero-Pressure Fun: Because I’m not stressed about a leaderboard, I get to enjoy pure entertainment. If I lose, who cares? I’m just here to have a good time and enjoy the ride.
The Ultimate House Perk: Speaking the Same Language
Even though the boys are screaming into their headsets while I’m happily exploring a digital world, being an all-gamer household is a massive win.
It means we speak the same language. I get why they can't "just pause" an online match. They get why I need to finish saving my game before I make dinner. It gives us this incredible, modern way to connect, laugh, and trash-talk each other right from the comfort of the living room couch.
We might play differently, but under this roof, we all press start.
