By Momof2Boyz — Where “10 more minutes” is a lifestyle
Every night, I tell myself the same thing:
“Tonight will be smooth. Calm. Easy.”
Every night… I’m wrong.
Because bedtime in a house with boys isn’t a routine.
It’s a negotiation, a performance, and a full-contact sport.
The Legendary “10 More Minutes”
It starts the same way every time.
“Alright boys, time for bed.”
And like clockwork:
“Can we have 10 more minutes?”
Now listen…
I’m not unreasonable.
I’ve fallen for this trap before.
So I say yes.
But here’s the thing nobody warns you about:
Kid minutes are not real minutes.
That “10 minutes” somehow turns into:
One more show
One more snack
One more “wait I forgot something”
One more trip to literally nowhere
Next thing I know, it’s been 20 minutes, and I’m standing there like:
“How did we get here??”
Teeth Brushing: The Daily Battle
Then comes brushing teeth.
In theory, simple.
In reality? A full investigation.
“Did you brush your teeth?”
“Yeah.”
No. No you didn’t.
Because somehow:
The toothbrush is dry
The toothpaste is untouched
And the “brushing” lasted approximately 2 seconds
So now we’re back in the bathroom like:
“Round 2. Let’s try this again… properly.”
Why Does Bedtime = Playtime?
This is the part that confuses me the most.
All day long:
“I’m tired”
“I don’t want to do anything”
“Can I just relax?”
But the second bedtime hits?
ENERGY. OUT OF NOWHERE.
Now suddenly:
They’re comedians
They’re gymnasts
They’re philosophers asking deep life questions
They’re sprinting like they just prepped for a marathon
It’s like bedtime flips a switch:
“Oh, it’s time to go to sleep? Cool… let’s do the opposite.”
The Wrestling Match Nobody Asked For
And because I’m raising boys…
Bedtime is apparently the perfect time to: WRESTLE.
Out of nowhere:
Someone jumps on someone
Someone takes it too far
Someone gets mad
Someone cries
And now we’ve gone from:
“Let’s get ready for bed”
To:
“Why are we crying at 9:12 PM???”
Every. Single. Night.
From Calm to Chaos in Seconds
What’s supposed to be:
Quiet
Peaceful
A wind-down moment
Turns into:
Negotiations
Mini arguments
Random bursts of energy
Emotional breakdowns
Me questioning everything
All before anyone even touches a pillow.
“But We Have a Routine…”
Oh, we have a routine.
We’ve tried:
Same bedtime every night
Same steps, same order
Calm voices
Warnings
Countdown timers
Every parenting trick in the book
And it works…
Until it doesn’t.
Because the older they get, the more they realize:
“Wait… I can push this a little further.”
And they do.
Every night, just a little more.
The Truth No One Talks About
Bedtime isn’t just about sleep.
It’s the moment where:
Kids don’t want the day to end
They want a little more time
A little more attention
A little more fun
And even though it drives me crazy…
There’s something kind of sweet about it too.
Final Thoughts From a Mom in the Trenches
If your nights look anything like mine:
“10 more minutes” turning into 20
Toothbrushing battles
Sudden bursts of energy
Wrestling → fighting → crying
Chaos right before calm
Just know…
You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re just raising kids.
Momof2Boyz Reminder 💙
One day, bedtime will actually be quiet.
No more:
Negotiating
Wrestling
“10 more minutes”
And honestly?
We might miss the chaos a little.
…just not tonight 😅
