Letโs talk about it.
If youโre a parent, youโve probably said at least once:
โTurn that off.โ
โYouโve been on that all day.โ
โLast game. I mean it.โ
And yetโฆ here we are. ๐
Video games are part of our kidsโ world. Whether itโs console games, handheld devices, or playing with friends online, gaming isnโt going anywhere. So instead of fighting it 24/7, maybe the real question is:
How do we parent through it without losing our minds?
๐ฏ The Good: Yes, There Are Benefits
Before we grab the pitchforks, letโs be honest. Video games can actually:
Improve problem-solving skills
Build hand-eye coordination
Encourage teamwork (especially multiplayer games)
Teach persistence (they will replay that level 42 times)
Provide social connection
For some kids, especially those who struggle socially in person, gaming can actually be their comfort zone.
Have you ever overheard your child explaining strategy to a friend? The planning. The communication. The negotiation. Itโs kind of impressive.
โ ๏ธ The Hard Part: Balance Is Everything
Hereโs where it gets real.
Too much gaming can lead to:
Mood swings when itโs time to stop
Less physical activity
Sleep disruption
Attitude changes
โI canโt pause this!โ arguments
And letโs not ignore the big one:
The meltdown when Wi-Fi goes down.
If you know, you know.
๐ง The Bigger Conversation
Instead of only focusing on screen time limits, maybe we should also ask:
Why does this game matter so much to them?
Is it their stress relief?
Is it their way to connect with friends?
Are they escaping something?
Sometimes gaming isnโt just โa game.โ Itโs social currency. Itโs identity. Itโs community.
That doesnโt mean unlimited access. It means understanding before reacting.
๐ก What Has Worked in Our House
Every family is different, but here are a few things that have helped:
โ๏ธ Clear time limits (and sticking to them)
โ๏ธ Games only after responsibilities are done
โ๏ธ No gaming before school
โ๏ธ Devices out of bedrooms at night
โ๏ธ Playing with them sometimes (yesโฆ even if youโre terrible)
When we join their world instead of just policing it, something shifts.
๐ฌ Letโs Talk About It
Now I want to hear from you:
How much screen time do your kids get?
Do you allow gaming during the week?
Have you noticed behavior changes linked to video games?
Are you strictโฆ or more relaxed?
No judgment here. Parenting doesnโt come with a manual โ especially not one updated for Wi-Fi and Fortnite.
Drop your experience in the comments. Letโs help each other navigate this digital parenting world together. ๐
Because at the end of the day, itโs not really about the gameโฆ
Itโs about raising healthy, balanced kids in a world that looks very different from the one we grew up in.
Now tell me โ are you Team โTurn It Offโ or Team โOne More Gameโ? ๐
