# The Family Outing Nobody Wanted

**By Momof 2Boyz** · 2026-06-19

There should be an Olympic medal for getting kids out of the house. Especially when you announce a “fun family outing” and suddenly everyone acts like you personally ruined their lives.

Nobody wants to put shoes on.

Someone can’t find their favorite hoodie.

One kid is dramatically starving even though they ignored dinner suggestions for the last hour.

Another suddenly remembers they’re “too tired” to go anywhere.

And somehow… we still go.

Honestly, half of parenting feels like forcing tiny humans to participate in memories they’ll later claim were magical.

The funny part? The beginning is almost always chaos. You question if leaving the house was worth it. You wonder if staying home in pajamas would have been easier. You consider turning the car around at least twice before you even hit the first traffic light.

But then something shifts.

Maybe it’s when the music comes on in the car and everyone starts singing.

Maybe it’s the arcade game competition that gets way too serious.

Maybe it’s the random joke at dinner that has everyone laughing so hard they can’t breathe.

Somewhere between the complaints and the french fries, the mood changes.

And suddenly the kids who were “absolutely not going” are smiling, laughing, asking for dessert, and telling you this was actually fun.

Those are the moments that make the exhausting start worth it.

As parents, we carry so much pressure to create perfect memories. Perfect vacations. Perfect weekends. Perfect family moments. But the truth is, most family memories don’t start perfectly.

Sometimes they start with whining. Sometimes they start with slammed doors. Sometimes they start with you bribing everyone with snacks just to get in the car.

But they still become memories.

Some of my favorite family nights started as complete disasters. The kind where I almost canceled the whole thing because everyone was in a mood. Yet by the end of the night, we’re sitting around dinner talking, laughing, and enjoying each other in a way that never would’ve happened if we stayed home.

Kids don’t always know they need the outing.

Sometimes we don’t either.

But getting out together matters.

Not because everything goes perfectly, but because life gets busy. Everyone gets distracted. Screens take over. Schedules pile up. And those couple hours together at dinner or wandering around somewhere fun remind us that underneath all the chaos… we actually enjoy each other.

Even if it starts with kicking and screaming.
